njh20 asked:

How many people’s parents or family members will be affected if the auto companies do not get the bail out? My dad works for one, and I am thoroughly worried about him losing his job, because it will affect me. But, I want to see how many others respond to this question if their family works for one of the Big 3 auto companies.

I work for one of them. Sad but true you won’t get much sympathy on this site because people are misinformed. Although it is a very real problem I don’t think your dad would want you to carry this burden. Good luck, BhitchyPrincess

I work for one of the big 3….but it is not only people working directly for GM, Ford or Chrysler that would be adversely effected if they go out of business. There would be a huge trickle down effect.

There are hundreds of suppliers that would have massive layoffs. There would be all of those Dealerships all over the country that would have to shut down. Newspapers and Magazines are already feeling the effect of the car makers cutting back on their ad spending. State and local governments get a lot of their tax revenue from the sale of new cars. Government would have no choice but to layoff workers if their budgets fall short. The list goes on and on….

    It’s the domino effect.

If the big 3 go under, we will go from a recession to a depression. Tom

My dad and grandpa both worked for gm and are now retired with pension and benifits. We are really worried they’ll lose their pensions. It would be terrible if they lost what they worked at least 30 years for.
I KNOW a lot of people who work for gm as well…I live 9 miles from FLINT so yeah. I just hate home many idots out there are so against the US companies. I think i heard 6 million jobs could be lost as a ripple effect. Is that just ignored by these americans who are so blinded by the CEO’s? come on were your fellow americans under the same country, the economy would just get worse, like most likely a depression if they aren’t give a LOAN, not free money. securiteeboyz

We keep hearing about mismanagement, fat and lazy workers, excutives that make too much money. This is coming from short sighted, greedy and uninformed people.

The mismanagement part stems from the big three are tooled up to build gas guzzlers. This is because people in the USA wanted gasguzzlers! Five years ago Ford was SELLING, 750,000 F150’s and 450,000 Explorers. At that time they had no idea, nor anyone else, that gas prices would hit $4.50 per gal. When that occured Ford and the others, began retooling. That cost Billions to do and normally 3+ years.

This was not just the USA companies either. Toyota build 2 new truck plants (Indiana and Texas) just to get into the business. Both plants have either been modified to run a different product or layed off employees.

Secondly, people want to say that the UAW employees are overpaid. Well they are paid at a rate that reflects how much the company was making. When Ford was making Billions, they were paying out billions in raises, profit sharing and dividends. The raises are all but gone the difidends are gone and the profit sharing is gone. The union and the company agreed upon multiyear contracts that BOTH sides considered fair, at that time.

As for Retirees? Put your self in their position. The worked for a company for 30 to 50 years. They planned their entire life, on fininshing their carreer, and living off their saving, which included pension and Social Security. Note, did anyone know that the average retiree draws 17 monthly checks, before they die? Now consider that pension going away…..you have people in their late 60’s being forced back into the work force. Competing for jobs that everyone else need also.

As for overpaid Excutives. Bill Ford, during his tenure as CEO worked for nothing! Sure Bill has lots of inherited money, but he said that if the company was not making money, he would not either. The good thing he realized that the company needed a shot in the arm, from someone who could make the right business decisions, thus they hired Alan Mulally from Boeing. This guy had a great track record that helped in turning around Boeing, so the thought was he could do that with Ford. He came at a higher price. But look at the potential gain. This is a company that should be, and will be, making Billions of Dollars, so his pay will be Millions. Compare this to a baseball player like Alex Rodrigez, he makes hundreds of millions of dollars to play a game that I would play for hundreds of thousands. Is that fair? Sure it is, he is making the Yankees, hundreds of millions in profits, so why not share the wealth. Or do you thing that George Stienbrenner should get it all? Works the same way with big business.

As for the cheap shots coming from our polititians about flying in coorporate jets? What a joke our politians are. Talk about over paid bumpkins! How do you thing they get to their fancy offices and million dollar suites in Washington DC, that all the taxpayers are paying for? Hitchhike? No they fly in their private jets. Is the US government making money? If they were paid for performance, they would be living in a trailerhouse, working for food stamps.

If all the polititans that are against the loans, (Note all the politians that are against the Loans, are from states that have other industries, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Subaru, Mercedes, BMW) would stop thier greedy, self serving onslought, and concern themselves with taking care of the ecconomy, by creating jobs, they we would get out of this mess. (wasn’t that what they were elected to do?)

Yeh I am worried too, but it goes way past loosing retirement, we are loosing our whole ecconomy to coutries that we fought wars against, and we are letting them win. Rick K
