How much faster is an auto than a manual in the 1/4 mi?
atvman_400 asked:
On most stock cars, a manual trans will be faster in the 1/4, but drag racers all seem to use autos on the faster cars. I am currently planning on putting a 625hp crate engine in my 1990 Mustang. I want to go with a manual trans, but will an auto make it faster at the strip? If so, which trans and stahl convertor would work the best? I would like an overdrive trans so I am not revving too high on the freeway.

I wouls say if you like the 1/4 mil only, definlty auto, for you can also power shift, if the converter is good. As far as anything else, i am doing a manual, i plan to drive around town and it makes it easy when u only have to go to third gear, but best overall it depend I say manual, couple of advarages, the only dis atvantage no O/D.
It depends on the car and the driver. Manual transmissions are more efficient than automatics so there is less power lost to friction. Most serious racers will still use an automatic because its more consistent. You leave the line at the same RPM every time without worrying about missing a shift or slipping the clutch a little differently each time.
First off, there’s a big difference between “faster” and “quicker”; an automatic is quicker than a stick, but not necessarily faster.
Second, since you’re pumping so much horsepower, you’ll probably never notice a difference between an automatic and a stick; most of the difference will literally go up in (tire) smoke anyway Launching will be easier with an automatic, but since you’ve got so much h/p, it still won’t be a whole lot of fun!
Third, since you’re planning on driving this beast on the highway, you’re going to need an o/d, or a huge gas tank! You have a choice: either a five-speed stick or a Ford o/d automatic, with a lock-up converter.
If it were my choice, I’d go with the Tremec five speed..good luck!
the “auto” transmissions you are talking about guys having at the track are the powerglide tranys. They are 2 gear transmissions. They are not the auto transmissions you are use to seeing on cars. If your car is going to be a track car only then this is a good choice, otherwise just go with a T56 6 speed out of a totalled 03/04 cobra. You will get a top of the line tranny for a good price. As far as 1/4 mile times go, there is little to no difference with an experiance driver with a standard auto (non powerglide) and standard manual as long as the guy with the auto has a transbrake. Other wise you cant launch an auto at 4000 rmps and the manual will be faster. Like I said, for everyday driving and freeway driving in my opinion, your best choice would be a T56. This is also the same tranny used in the dodge vipers, it really is a great transmission.
