Why should Republican congressional members listen to Obama’s request for auto industry assistance?

Obama now comes out and says Congress should lend money to the auto industry.
Why would Republican congressional members give a hoot about what a president-elect is telling them they should do?

Maybe because he is in fact the de facto President. Bush has no political capital, and will be gone in a few weeks.
